What are the wine windows (buchette del vino) in Florence?
The buchette del vino are small rectangular openings carved into the stone walls of Florentine noble palazzos — originally used from the 16th century onwards to sell wine directly from the palace cellars to passersby, without the merchant needing to open the main door. Florence has around 150 of these historic windows, and they famously returned to use during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 when bar owners began selling wine and cocktails through them as a socially distanced service. This tour visits several of the most historic and atmospheric examples.
Where in Florence are the wine windows located?
The greatest concentration of buchette del vino is found in the Oltrarno district (south of the Arno). Several also survive in the historic center north of the river. The tour traces a route through the neighborhoods where these windows are still embedded in the walls of 16th and 17th-century palazzos — mostly invisible to tourists following the standard sightseeing trail.
What hidden gems does the Florence evening tour cover beyond the wine windows?
The tour explores the parts of Florence that most visitors never reach: artisan workshops tucked into medieval courtyards, palazzi with extraordinary frescoed facades, hidden piazzas where locals gather in the evening, and corners of the city tied to legends and lesser-known stories from Florentine history.
What tastings are included in the Florence hidden gems tour?
Tuscan wine and local products are tasted at stops along the route — the specifics vary slightly by season and availability, but the tasting component is integrated into the walk rather than saved for the end. The guide selects producers and spots with genuine local character. The overall experience is more like an accompanied evening stroll with a knowledgeable Florentine friend than a formal tasting event.
Is this tour better for first-time visitors or for people returning to Florence?
The tour is particularly rewarding for repeat visitors or those who have already seen the main monuments and want to discover a different side of the city. That said, it also makes an excellent complement to a first visit — an evening tour through hidden Florence gives you a sense of the living city that daytime sightseeing rarely provides. The guide's storytelling assumes no prior knowledge of Florence.
