A standard gondola typically follows busy tourist routes along the Grand Canal. This private tour routes specifically through the lesser-known calli and rii — the narrow streets and hidden canals most visitors never see. Your private gondolier navigates through the quietest corners of Venice, where the city's sounds fade and you experience the lagoon city as Venetians have for centuries: from the water, through secret passages and under ancient bridges.

The gondola has been the defining boat of Venice for over 1,000 years. Its distinctive asymmetric shape — the left side wider than the right — is a deliberate design to compensate for the gondolier's weight when rowing on the right, allowing the boat to glide straight without a rudder. In the 17th century, the Venetian government standardized them in black to limit displays of wealth. Today about 400 gondolas remain, each hand-crafted from 280 pieces of 8 different types of wood.

In case of heavy rain or strong currents, the gondola ride may be canceled for safety reasons and a partial refund will be issued. Venice, however, is surprisingly beautiful even in rain — the reflections on the canal water and the mist over the lagoon give the city a magical, melancholic quality many visitors find even more evocative than a sunny day. The walking portion of the tour continues rain or shine.

The walking portion takes you through some of Venice's most beautiful and authentic neighborhoods — far from the crowds around Rialto and St. Mark's. You'll discover hidden campi (small Venetian squares), cross ancient bridges, pass historic palazzi, and explore areas of everyday Venetian life: local bakeries, markets, and artisan workshops that have survived for generations.

Venice was built on a lagoon on wooden piles driven into the soft seabed — a feat of engineering begun over 1,500 years ago by people seeking refuge from mainland invasions. The city rests on approximately 177 small islands connected by around 400 bridges. Yes, Venice has been slowly sinking at about 1-2mm per year due to natural sediment compaction and historical groundwater extraction. The MOSE project — a system of flood barriers — was completed in 2020 to protect the city from the increasingly frequent "acqua alta."
