A Thermopolium was the ancient Roman equivalent of a street food counter — a fast-food restaurant. These establishments featured large terracotta jars (dolia) embedded in masonry counters to keep food warm. Over 80 thermopolia have been identified in Pompeii. The most spectacular, excavated in 2020, still contained identifiable food residues: lentils, pork, fish, and wine — a direct snapshot of a meal frozen in time on August 24, 79 AD.

The Calchi dei Corpi (plaster body casts) are among the most poignant artifacts at Pompeii. When Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, victims were buried under volcanic ash. As their bodies decomposed over centuries, they left hollows in the hardened material. In 1863, archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli pioneered pouring liquid plaster into these cavities to recreate the exact forms of the victims — including their agonized poses, facial expressions, clothing folds, and even jewelry. About 100 body casts are visible today.

The erotic frescoes of Pompeii — many found in the Lupanar (the city's official brothel), in bathhouses, and in private homes — are among the most discussed artifacts from the ancient city. In Roman society, explicit imagery was not seen with the same taboo as in modern culture: it appeared in commercial spaces and even as lucky amulets (fascinum).
