What can you see from the top of the Florence Cathedral dome?
From the lantern at the top of Brunelleschi's dome - at 91 metres - you have a 360-degree panorama of Florence: the Arno river, the Uffizi, Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Croce, and the surrounding Tuscan hills stretching to Fiesole and beyond. The climb also passes the point where you look down into the cathedral interior through gaps between the dome's shells, and see Giorgio Vasari's fresco of the Last Judgment up close - an experience unavailable from the ground.
Is it worth climbing the Florence Duomo dome compared to just visiting the terraces?
Both are excellent but they offer different experiences. The terraces (exterior walkways on the cathedral roof at ~55 metres) give open-air views of the dome from the outside and city panoramas. The dome climb takes you inside the structure - between the two shells - before emerging at the lantern at 91 metres for a higher view, plus the unique experience of seeing Vasari's frescoes at close range. Doing both is the ideal choice!

What is the Baptistery of Florence, and why are the "Gates of Paradise" famous?
The Florence Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni) is one of the oldest buildings in the city, it was already ancient when Dante was baptized there in the 13th century. The "Gates of Paradise" are the gilded bronze east doors created by Lorenzo Ghiberti between 1425 and 1452, depicting Old Testament scenes with a revolutionary use of perspective and spatial depth. Michelangelo is said to have given them their name. The originals are now protected in the Duomo Museum, while high-quality replicas remain on the Baptistery.
