What is a Florentine barchetto and how is it different from a gondola?
The barchetto is a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat indigenous to the Arno River in Florence, propelled by a barcaiolo (boatman) using a long pole — a technique that predates the gondola by centuries and is specific to the shallower, faster-flowing waters of the Arno. Unlike the Venetian gondola, which is asymmetrical and designed for the still lagoon waters, the barchetto is a symmetrical craft adapted to a river current. Only four original wooden barchetti remain in active use in Florence today, making a river experience on one genuinely rare. On this tour, our boat is one of these surviving historical vessels, guided by a barcaiolo keeping alive a craft tradition that has defined the Arno for five hundred years.
What do you see on the Arno River cruise in Florence?
The Arno River cruise on the barchetto passes some of Florence's most iconic sights from a perspective most visitors never experience: the water level. You pass directly beneath Ponte Vecchio — the city's famous 14th-century bridge lined with goldsmiths' shops — and look up at it from below, a view that no ground-level walk can replicate. The cruise also passes the exterior of the Uffizi Gallery, the Santa Trinita Bridge, the elegant Palazzo Corsini on the south bank, and the arches of several other historic bridges. As the sun sets, the warm light reflects off the river and illuminates the facades of the palaces along the banks. Our barcaiolo and guide provide commentary throughout the approximately 45-minute cruise.
Does the Accademia and Arno cruise combo include skip-the-line access?
Yes — skip-the-line entrance tickets to the Accademia Gallery are included in this combo tour. The Accademia is one of the most visited museums in Italy, with queues for visitors without pre-booked timed entry often exceeding an hour in high season. The fast-track access included in this tour means the group enters promptly at the scheduled time and can cover the gallery's highlights — Michelangelo's David, the Prisoners, the Florentine painting collection — within the allocated time, leaving the afternoon free for the Arno River cruise. The cruise itself needs no separate ticket; it is fully included in the tour price.
Is an aperitif included in the Accademia and sunset cruise tour?
Yes — a chilled glass of wine (or a soft drink for younger guests) is served on board the barchetto during the Arno River cruise. The aperitif is included in the tour price and is served while the boat glides along the river, with Florence's palaces, bridges, and monuments visible on both banks. This on-board drink is not a full tasting or a dinner service — it is a single glass to accompany the experience of watching the city transition from afternoon to evening light from the water. It is, in the view of many guests, one of the most memorable moments of their time in Florence.
How long is the Arno River cruise on this Florence combo tour?
The Arno River cruise on the barchetto lasts approximately 45 minutes. Combined with the guided Accademia Gallery visit (approximately 1.5 hours), the total experience typically takes around 3 hours from the first meeting point. Please note that this is a combo tour with two different meeting points: Via Ricasoli 58/60 for the Accademia section, and Via de' Lamberti 1 for the boat cruise. Full instructions for both meeting points are provided at the time of booking. Please be at the first meeting point at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
